Missionary Funnies

Thought this would give you a little insight into our very normal daily lives as missionaries in a foreign country  ;)

* My lttle sister speaks Spanglish. ALL the time, lol!

* People at the stores think we're dirty-rich tourists and always try to give us higher prices on things

* My brothers talk to my parents in Spanish, and they respond in English.

* For me, the hardest question in the world is:  "Where are you from?"

* Some of my closest friends are Chileans

* My dad has to watch Bonanza in Spanish. Very funny to hear the Cartrights speak Spanish.. haha. You can just imagine!

* M&Ms are a real treat we never get 'cause they're so expensive.

* Our ears perk up at the sound of English

* We get excited when we see grass.. LOL! (you see.. we live in the desert :)

* It's normal for us to dream in Spanish.

* We can't say "we're Americans" because people here will say "we're Americans, too!" (very true) and can easily get offended.. lol

* Cockroaches at night are a normal sight in our front yard.

* We can't speak either language 100% correctly!

* We go to bed after midnight every single night

* I've made a habit clearing a path from my bed to the satirs every night. Never know when an earthquake might hit. And fyi.. they have. In the middle of the night! and I've had to rush down the stairs. So it's def. a good habit to have!

* Kids on the street start yelling "I love you!" as you go by. Probably 'cause it's the only English they know and they want to practice it on somebody  :)

Well.. I'm sure I could come up with many many more, but I really better get back to doing school. Uh-oh... shhh! Mom's coming! Lol.. jk  =)  I DO have to get back to school, though!

Hope you enjoyed these! Not all of them are funny, but I think they might be somewhat interesting to some of you  :)

I would love to answer any questions you might have! Just leave me a comment and let me know!

God bless!

Chile Earthquake

Hey everybody!

I'm sure that by now you all know about the 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile 2 days ago. We live in the very northern tip of Chile, so we did not feel it. PTL! But we do have many, MANY friends that live in the epicenter area. They are all well and safe, but a lot of homes were completely destroyed. Just looking at the news, I am shocked at all the damage that has been done to this beloved country. But it is amazing to see God's loving hand in each situation.. and how he has taken care of our friends and other missionaries there!
Usually, the place that gets hit by all the quakes is northern Chile (where we live), so whenever we see the news I'm like "that could've been us!".

I was just in Santiago (Chile's capital that got hit really hard) two months ago, so it is SO shocking to see the situation they're in! Lots of our friends live there, and I can't imagine what they're going through right now. Buildings are slanted and broken in half while there are people stuck in there struggling to survive, there is no water and people are dying of thirst (especially in the smaller, coastal cities), there is no electricity in many areas, grocery stores are being broken into and emptied of there contents because people have no food to eat, and it's all just awful. Many people know nothing of their family members, because all the phone lines are down. I feel so helpless to do anything, and I wish there was something I could do to help all these dear people! Even though I am so far away and helpless to do anything, God isn't! That's a very comforting thought. All we can do is PRAY! That is our part.. and we must pray!

In Arica, the city where we live, there were some tsunami warnings, but nothing happened. Even though we are far away, the earthquake is affecting us. My parents had to go to the grocery store yesterday, and it was FULL of people. My parents were shocked at the way people were stocking up on groceries. Boxes and boxes of milk and other supplies were being loaded into shopping carts, and then being purchased.
Factories in the south of Chile have been severely affected by the earthquake, and highways have been damaged and ruined, which means that pretty soon we might be running out of groceries to buy, since the super markets here rely heavily on imported merchandise. So you see, that's why people are buying groceries like crazy.

I don't know why such a terrible thing has happened, but I DO know that my God is good!.. and that His mercy is everlasting! I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future  =)  I know that we are safe in God's hands.

Please keep the people of Chile in your prayers!! There is SO much to pray about. My friend Sarah Beth, MK in Peru, has a friend in her church that has family in southern Chile, and he hasn't been able to get through to them, so doesn't even know if they're OK or not. Not only him, but a ton of others still have not heard from their friends or family members. Please pray that they would be filled with God's peace during this time!

My God is.........

Hope ya'll are having a wonderful Sunday so far!

In our youth Sunday School class, for the past four months or so, we've been learning 3-5 verses every week on WHO our God is. It has been such a blessing to me. This morning in our SS class we had to say the first verse on each card; a total of 25 verses! Many of us said them, and the prize is a brand new Bible  =)   My Bible is 10 years old.. so I was in desperate need of a new one!!

Here's a pic of all my verse cards  :)  Oh.. and yeah..  I had to say them in Spanish! I actually know more verses in Spanish than in English.. lol.

Later!

Window to my life...

Hey there, everybody!

I'M BACK!  Yay! lol. I thought it was time to let ya'll in on what's been going on lately  :D  But first let me say.. Happy New Year!! A little late, I know, but still... I HAD to say it. Hope you all have a wonderful and blessed year!

2009 was a great year for me. Even though it wasn't all "strawberries and cream", I wouldn't change it for the world! It was a year in which God tought me many things.. about Himself, about others, and yes.. about myself, too. I'm thankful for everything God allowed into my life last year. Not just the good things, but also the bad things... because it is through problems and trying times that I get to know my Lord better! It is through these things that I am made stronger in Christ.

At the end of  '09... great things started happening! I was very blessed to be able to go to Santiago (the capital of Chile) for 9 days to attend a Steve Pettit music conference!! I'd known for about a year that they were planning on coming, and ever since.. I wanted to go! I was thrilled at the news that were coming, and even more so when God provided for my mom and I, along with some friends from church, to go! That was probably the best week of my life so far  :)  Everybody on the team was a big blessing to me. Their love for the Lord just shown through in an amazing way.. and I was so blessed for getting to know them! I got to stay with Katie (one of the twins on the team). She was so encouraging and such a huge blessing to me  :)

The same day I got back from Santiago (Dec.18th), I went to a young ladies' retreat at my missionary friends' church in Tacna, Peru. Even though I was exhausted from having traveled back from Santiago all night, I had an amazing time! My mom and some young ladies' from church went me. It was a big blessing to all of us. God worked in a great way those couple of days. Many decisions were made about the topics discussed.

As soon as the retreat ended (Dec. 19th), we had to rush back accross the border to our city of Arica. We made the taxi drop us right off at the church. We had our Christmas cantata rehearsal and could not miss it! So we stayed there for several hours... singing, and singing.. and more singing. We were so tired. We finally got to go home and rest up for the cantata the next day.
The day after the cantata. we had our youth Christmas party which went really well  :D... and then Christmas with family, and then New Years, then my btother's birthday... and.. phew! ... here we are!

So far this year... I've been:  going to a summer swimming program at the city swimming pool, doing a litttle bit of school, doing basket ball, reading, and going to the beach! I LOVE summer  =D

We're also looking forward to having many special activities with our youth group this summer. Please pray for our youth group... that it would grow: both in number and spiritually.

A week from today is my 17th birthday! Wow... I can't believe it yet, lol! And.. in a couple weeks my family and I are going on a.... well..sort of a missions trip to Iquitos, Peru! Yep.. jungle, Amazon River, monkeys, big huge bugs, pirhanas.. all that good stuff  :)  We're attending a conference with the churches there, but hope to be used of the Lord to be a blessing to the people there. Please pray for us!

Our summer will also include a children's VBS and well as one for teens! we've never done this before (the teens' one), but think it will be a great outreach ministry and a "boost" to the church, as well.

Well... so far, 2010 looks very promising. I have many plans and thoughts for this year.. things I'm still praying about, but only God knows :) I'll try to keep you posted on all the different things that happen!

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a great, blessing-filled weekend!
